"We developed Mess Hall to be a family-friendly, casual environment. Mom and dad can get drinks from the bar, and the kids can order food from the kids' menu."
Nate Leonard, founding partner and director of operations at the Mess Hall, described it this way to Eater SF before the food hall opened on Saturday, August 15. For its first seven weeks, the Mess Hall has shared Tunnel Tops with the trucks, carts and tents of Presidio Pop Up. That changes at the end of this month. The Pop Up's spring and summer season runs from April 1 through October 31, 2026. After that, the Mess Hall at 201 Halleck Street becomes the only fixed address beside Tunnel Tops that serves food and drink after sundown.
Until now, food at Tunnel Tops has been something you could find during the day, in season. From November on, the park's eastern edge has a permanent kitchen that stays open into the evening.
A Daytime Park Gets an Evening Kitchen
The Pop Up is a good amenity. A rotating lineup of more than two dozen local vendors sets up around Tunnel Tops and near the Presidio Visitor Center, selling everything from morning coffee and donuts to birria tacos. Its hours, though, fit a park visit, not an evening out. Vendors serve from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekends, and service depends on the weather.
The Mess Hall's posted hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The bar keeps its own schedule, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the café and market open at 7 a.m. and the restaurant counters start at 11 a.m.

|---|---|---|
| Season | April 1 to October 31, 2026 | Year-round |
| Weekday hours | 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. | 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. |
| Weekend hours | 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. | 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. |
| Weather | Vendors may not open | Indoor, historic building |
| Lineup | Changes daily | Fixed counters, bar, café, market |
On a weekday, the Pop Up serves for six hours and the Mess Hall's posted day runs thirteen. On weekends, the gap grows from eight and a half hours to fifteen. Those extra hours fall at the start and end of the day: a 7 a.m. coffee before a walk to Crissy Field, and a 9 p.m. table on a Friday, long after the trucks have left.
Off the Grid's Presidio Picnic, long the other weekend food gathering in the park, shows no upcoming events on its venue page right now. That makes the Mess Hall's fixed schedule more important to how the park works as the days get shorter.
The Building Behind the Counter
The food hall sits in a 6,200-square-foot building that the Army built as a depot in 1897. Founding partners Nate Leonard and Rob Gaon developed the project, and chef Peter Serpico consulted on the menus. Eater SF describes three restaurant concepts. Boda focuses on Korean and Asian-inflected dishes. Dayboat Seafood runs a raw bar alongside cooked dishes. Breadwinner handles hot and cold sandwiches and burgers. Coffee comes from Wrecking Ball Coffee Roasters, and the market stocks picnic-ready items such as Rize Up bread, cheese and bottled drinks.
The Mess Hall's own website still marks Boda as "Coming Soon." On August 20, 7x7 reported that Boda had not yet started service. If Korean dishes are the reason for your visit, check with the venue first.
The current menus give a clear sense of where the room sits. At Breadwinner, the smash burger is $17, the pit-beef sandwich is $21 and the build-your-own salad is $17. At Dayboat, the Dungeness crab roll is $29, fish and chips are $26, and oysters are $24 a half-dozen.
The crab roll is a useful link between the two seasons. The Presidio's own description of the Pop Up has long promised Dungeness crab rolls served with beer from a truck. After October 31, that same pairing is on a permanent menu under a roof, with a bar that stays open past dark.
You order at the counter, at kiosks or through QR codes at the tables. The research found no public table-reservation system, so the Mess Hall works more like a park pavilion than a dining room. That fits a stop on the way home from the Marina Green, for example.
Fleet Week Puts the New Arrangement to Its First Test
Before the trucks leave, the Mess Hall faces its busiest weekend so far. The Fleet Week air show flies over the Marina Green from noon to 4 p.m., Friday, October 9 through Sunday, October 11. The Presidio Trust expects bigger crowds than usual, especially near the Main Post and Crissy Field. This year it is changing how cars reach the park.
Starting at noon on Saturday and Sunday, several streets and the park's eastern entrances will close to cars. The closures include driverless cars, Uber and Lyft. Vehicles already in the park before noon can still leave. All rideshare pickup and drop-off moves to the Main Post, near the Presidio Visitor Center and the Presidio Officers' Club. Cyclists, the Presidio GO Shuttle and Muni buses can use the roads the whole time.
For anyone coming from Pacific Heights, Cow Hollow or Presidio Heights, the practical routes are on foot, by bike or by bus. The Muni 43 Masonic runs to Presidio Tunnel Tops. The free Presidio GO Downtown Route will run every 15 minutes from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. both weekend days.
The Mess Hall's website did not list special hours or a Fleet Week menu when the research was done. On the posted schedule, it is open until 10 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. That is hours after the 4 p.m. end of the air show and the Pop Up's 5:30 p.m. weekend close. Roads reopen to cars once it is safe after the show, and a late table with a view of the bay is now an option while traffic clears.
November, With One Kitchen Left Standing
The first full month without the Pop Up comes with a few fixed dates nearby:
- Friday, October 16. Fort Mason Night Market, one of the market's last three dates of 2026.
- Saturday, October 31. Last scheduled day of the Presidio Pop Up's spring and summer season.
- Friday, November 6. Fort Mason Night Market returns.
- Saturday, November 7. The Presidio's free, all-ages Día de los Muertos and Diwali festival at Tunnel Tops, noon to 3 p.m., with performances, crafts, ceremonies and storytelling.
- Friday, December 18. Fort Mason Night Market's final 2026 date, held indoors at Gateway Pavilion.
The November 7 festival is the clearest example of the new setup. It is the first major Tunnel Tops gathering of the off-season, and it ends at 3 p.m. on a Saturday. In earlier years, the dinner hour after a Tunnel Tops event meant leaving the park. This year, the building next door has its bar open until 9 p.m. and its doors open until 10 p.m. that night. On Friday nights, Fort Mason's market a short way east along the waterfront gives the northern neighborhoods a second evening option this fall.
Where the Mess Hall Fits Among the Presidio's Dining Rooms
The Presidio already has full-service restaurants. The Presidio Trust's dining directory describes more than a dozen restaurants in the park and lists Colibri, Dalida, Il Parco and Piccino Presidio along with the Mess Hall. Colibri Mexican Bistro is in the former Arguello space at the Presidio Officers' Club. The Officers' Club galleries are free and open Friday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Piccino Presidio took over the former Sessions at the Presidio space on Letterman Drive.
These are restaurants you plan around, with reservations, set courses and a table for the evening. The Mess Hall fills the space the Pop Up held, a place to eat without planning ahead, and keeps it open in the evening and through the winter. Before this fall, that kind of casual stop at Tunnel Tops had a season and a 3 p.m. weekday close. After October 31, it has a 1897 depot, a coffee counter opening at 7 a.m. and a crab roll on the menu every day of the year.
Here at The Di Prizito Group, Inc., we keep track of how openings like the Mess Hall change the daily rhythm around the Presidio's edge, from Pacific Heights and Presidio Heights to Cow Hollow and the Marina.
